The mission of the Foundation is to celebrate the life of Ian Tucker by raising awareness of sports-related brain injuries and supporting institutions that work to prevent and understand the effects of such injuries.

Ian Dairmid Kidger Tucker

Ian Tucker (1973 - 1996) was a well-accomplished individual who, in his 24 years, made a life out of achievement. A graduate of St Ignatius' College, Riverview, Ian stroked the first VIII and was a member of the 1st XV.

Always passionate and driven, Ian's ambition was to play rugby for Australia and after representing his state and country at the junior levels (U-19,U21), Ian went on to study at Oxford University where he continued his rugby career, playing in the senior team.

Ironically, Ian's life was cut short playing rugby when he made a tackle that resulted in an injury to his brain from which he did not recover.

Ian Tucker was a disciplined individual, who brought a positive attitude to everything he did and for whom achieving was a lifelong passion. The Foundation is based on these attributes.

The Foundation

The Foundation will raise money each year for recipients that the Board considers to embody the spirit of the foundation. Examples of potential recipients include:

  • Institutions examining the cause and effect of brain injuries in sport

  • Research into ways to prevent sports-related brain injuries

  • Donations to complementary public funds that work in similar ways to the Foundation, by raising awareness of the harms that may result from concussion in contact sports, and which work actively to prevent potentially fatal incidents in sport

The Oxford University Rugby Football Club - The Ian Tucker Memorial Statue at Iffley Road, Oxford University

Founded in 1869, and one of the oldest rugby clubs in the world, the OURFC is the principal bastion of rugby football and the leading amateur club in the United Kingdom. It is renowned for playing open and attractive rugby. Despite the surge in professionalism, the Club continues to maintain a high profile within the sport and the media. It continues to attract both top quality opposition, provided by National League clubs and international touring teams, and players and coaches of international standard.

Each year on the second Tuesday in December the The Varsity Match between the Dark Blues of Oxford University and the Light Blues of Cambridge University takes place. The Varsity Match is probably one of the oldest annual fixtures in the world. Since it's humble beginnings in 1872, the Varsity Match has become one of the most celebrated events of the rugby union calendar. Played every year at Twickenham since 1921, the match draws huge crowds to the stadium and is followed by people all over the world. Since 1976 CT Bowring & Co Ltd have sponsored this match, presenting the Bowring Bowl to the winners.

The Ian Tucker Memorial Statue stands at Iffley Road, overlooking the playing grounds of the OURFC. Each year the name of the Best & Fairest player from the Blues XV is inscribed on a plaque on the statue.

The Ian Tucker Foundation has taken the image of this statue as the emblem for the Foundation.
